Maybe we've saved the best for last.
Today, the WKWSCI faculty soccer team comprising Year 4's (myself, Kevin, Rongshan, Sikeng and Weiyang) and the Year 2's beat the mighty NIE 3-1.
It was some match, considering that they were supposed to be fitter, stronger and faster (having PE teachers and all that) based on their reputation.
Plus, they hammered us 7-0 last year, although the aforementioned Year 4's didn't play then.
This time around, I can proudly say that we fought hard, we fought fair and we deserved the win. Special mention must go to Clement, an attacking midfielder who played in goal for us as our goalie couldn't play, and also striker Kevin, who scored a hat-trick.
I say we've saved the best for last since we've never progressed beyond the group stage of this competition, as only the top team progresses out of three teams.
In our first two years, we always had to face MAE (Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering), a tough opponent. In both years, that was our first match, and defeat (both times) against them meant that our second match (always against a weak opponent) was rendered redundant.
So what made the difference today? For starters, the team spirit was there, unlike in previous years where the seniors didn't really include the juniors in team talks and discussions on tactics. Learning from that mistake, now we treat our juniors as our own.
With a sound defence to build from, and our midfielders hassling and harrassing, plus Kevin's clinical finishing we showed that big hearts and teamwork do matter in football and sometimes, the underdogs do triumph.
Tomorrow, we play the ADM (Art, Design & Media) team who were thrased 6-1 by NIE. Should we at least draw, we are through to the semis for the first time in my SCI life, and would have secured at least a 3rd/4th placing play-off.
But we can't afford to be complacent. Otherwise, today would have all been for nothing.
